Julie & the Phantoms Song Rank
Hello friends, this is Abby here. I got a lot of positive feedback about reviewing a series, so I thought I would tackle another one. Julie and the Phantoms came out in September and I love it. I mean I am seriously obsessed. The show follows Julie who recently lost her mom. When she is cleaning out her mom's old music studio, she plays an old CD and 3 ghosts (Luke, Reggie & Alex) appear out of nowhere. Long story short, they form a band called Julie and the Phantoms.
Now I bet you're wondering how this falls into the rom com category. There are two romantic relationships that come out of this show, Juke (Julie and Luke) & Alex and Willie. (Willie works for an evil ghost man, but he's good don't worry). So while this is not directly a rom com, it does have a bit of rom and bit of com, so I'm counting it. We are also ignoring the fact that this is a kids show. Let's get into the song ranking!
15: You Got Nothing to Lose
This song is sung by one of the evil side characters. It is a decent song, but because it is not sung by any of the main people (Julie, Luke, Alex, Reggie) it isn't one of my favorites. I wouldn't listen to this song outside of watching the show and it didn't move me very much when I was watching, so last place for this song.
14: I Got the Music
Julie didn't play music after her mom's passing and this song is about her excitement of now having music back in her life. Personally I think this song was put in the show only because there was no other song in this episode. So basically it was just filler. It is a really upbeat song, but it's not as good as the songs sung by Julie with her phantoms. There is also a small rap section and I think I would have liked the song a bit better if they took that out.
13: This Band is Back
The phantoms were walking around Hollywood trying to figure out why they came back as ghosts and Luke encourages his friends by telling them this is their second chance to play music together. Again, there is nothing significantly wrong with this song, it is just not my favorite. It sounds really spontaneous, which I do like about it.
12: The Other Side of Hollywood
Another song by the evil side character. This song is more about the spectacle when watching the show. The song by its self is fun to listen to, but you'd need to watch the video before listening to the song on its own to really enjoy it.
11: Wow
This song is sung by the mean girl Carrie and it is about how everyone says wow when they see her. I would listen to this song on it's own, but I do get sick of it after one time. As a mean girl song, it is perfect, it captures the essence of what it means to be a classic movie mean girl.
10: All Eyes on Me
This is the other mean girl song, I like this one a lot better. This song I don't get sick of. In the show they have Alex dance on the stage during the performance and it is really fun to watch. Also, I find the choreography so satisfying to watch. Overall I actually really like this song considering it is sung by a side character.
9: Finally Free
Now we are getting into the Julie and the Phantoms songs AKA, the good stuff. The band sings this song at an open mic night in an attempt to be discovered and I adore this song. The lyrics are really catchy and there is a nice buildup at the start of the song. I do listen to this song on it's own, and it's a good song to listen to even if you haven't seen the show. Also the Julie and Luke chemistry is amazing in this song.
8: Flying Solo
Julie has a best friend, Flynn, who doesn't believe that the ghosts are real and Julie and her phantoms perform this to Flynn to prove that they are real. The friendship between Julie and Flynn is highly underrated and this song proves it.
7: Now or Never
Before Luke, Alex and Reggie became ghosts they had a band called Sunset Curve and this was the song the song we got to hear from them. This song opens up the whole show, and it does a great job. It has a bit of a different vibe than the other songs, but I don't mind it. The boys perform it really well and it is fun to listen to. This is another one that I recommend listening to even if you haven't seen the show
6: Bright
This is the first song Julie sings with the Phantoms and it is spot on. The song itself is catchy and it makes me want to sing along with them. I have no problems with this song, and I love to listen to it, but it is not the best of the best.
5: Edge of Great
Julie and the Phantoms have a garage party at Julie's house so that they can make a video of their performance to post online. Julie's outfit for this performance is amazing and she has a really great (ha ha) stage presence for this song. For the first half of the song Julie is avoiding singing with Luke because she doesn't want to fall for a ghost, but Luke insists on singing next to her and we get some great Juke moments out of it.
4: Unsaid Emily
Oh boy, I might cry just writing about this song. Before Luke died, he and his mom (Emily) had fought and he never got to say goodbye or apologize for their argument, and Julie goes to Emily's house and gives her a song Luke wrote about how he regrets what he did to her and still loves her. During the show they show the argument, Emily reacting to her son's death and Luke singing the song as his mom reads it. Guys it is heartbreaking, but it actually made me have feelings, which is why I love it.
3: Wake Up
This is the first song Julie sings after her mom's passing and it is Powerful. The lighting crew did a good job with this one; the sun comes up behind Julie and the piano as she plays, it is seriously beautiful. The song alone sounds incredible, but when you know the backstory the lyrics and piano playing make it so much more meaningful. I get chills every time I listen to it.
2: Stand Tall
This is the final song of season 1 and my gosh it's a great finale. The moment Luke flashes onto the stage I feel like I regain all hope for the world. The song is so inspiring and the band really makes you feel empowered when they perform it. Again, this song works on its own, but knowing the backstory makes it better. I listen to this song whenever I need a pick me up, so I highly recommend this one.
1: Perfect Harmony
100000000/10. This song is now the reason I wake up in the morning. I told you there was some romance in this show and here it is. During this number Julie realizes she has feelings for Luke and imagines she is dancing with him during her dance class performance. My one complaint is that in the show they cut out like half the song, and I want to watch them dance for a full 4 minutes. But the 2 minute duet is my favorite 2 minutes of the whole show. Also, a little fun fact, Madison Reyes (who plays Julie) and Charlie Gillespie (who plays Luke) wrote the song together. If you only listen to one song on this list, make it this one, I promise you, it will be worth your time.
I hope you all enjoyed this song ranking, next post I will try to do something different (I have been doing a lot of ranking recently). Julie and the Phantoms is great show, I really hope you watch it, there are only 9, 30 minute episodes so you can easily knock it out in an afternoon. Seriously, I highly recommend you listen to some of these songs, (perhaps Perfect Harmony?) and with that my friends, I wish you all a wonderful day!
