Top 5 Must Have Clichés in Netflix Rom Coms

Hello friends, this is Abby here to tell you all about my favorite clichés in teen rom coms. I absolutely, with out a doubt, can not enjoy a rom com if it does not have these cheesy plot lines. The most popular rom coms always have these 5 things in them, which tells you that I am not the only one who enjoys watching these things play out. Okay, I'll stop rambling now and get into the list

5) The quirky main character:

Almost every teen rom com I've seen revolves around a "relatable" teenager. These characters are interesting because we see ourselves in them, they trip, they embarrass themselves, and make mistakes. Nobody expects the shy girl or the nerdy boy to find a perfect love story, which is why giving these characters perfect love stories gives the audience he for their own perfect love story. Characters with flaws makes the audience root for their success, ordinarily in love department, or in whatever decisions they need to make, which brings us to the next point:

4) The life altering decision:

Of all the side plots, this one is my favorite. The main character, or someone close to the main character, often needs to make a big decision. Usually in teen movies it has something to do with college, or the future in general. In the process of making the decision, the main character will go through a rough patch with those he or she is close with, which will later bring them closer together. If the main character herself/himself is not making the decision, it will greatly affect them in some way. Relationships need to be tested in order to make them seem real, love is not perfect in real life, so important decisions need to be made.

3) The 24 year old highschoolers

Let's face it, ordinary highschoolers are not the most beautiful people you've ever seen. Not to say that those of who are teenagers are ugly, (I'm sure you are very pretty) but as a teenager, I can confirm that I am still growing, and I am not yet at my peak of beauty. Casting the most beautiful people to play teenagers is very unrealistic, and to me implies that teenagers aren't good enough to play teenagers. But realistically, watching beautiful people is more fun than watching "regular" people, and 24 year old highschoolers have come to be expected at this point.

2) The love triangle

If you didn't see this one coming, I am shocked. The easiest way to create conflict in a teen rom com, is to find a character even more gorgeous and perfect than the main love interest. The love triangle is presented either at the half way point or in the sequel because the audience needs to be committed to the relationship that is going to work out. this brings us back to decision making, the love triangle can be one of those decision, but like I said, it has to be presented in a way that makes us hate the perfect, good looking new character.

1) The most dramatic kiss you've ever seen

At the end of this list, and the end of all rom coms, the perfect kiss. The entire movie we have watched the main character struggle to solve their problems and find the person they love along the way, and once they found it, they celebrate with a dramatic kiss. The perfect end to a perfect movie.
